Windshield Repair FAQs

Clear, honest answers based on thousands of mobile repairs in Colorado Springs since 2003.

Repair Basics

What we fix, how it looks, and how long it takes.

+What’s the difference between a chip, a crack, and a nick?

A chip is where the top layer of glass is actually broken from impact. A crack is a line that extends away from the impact point. A nick is just a tiny surface abrasion — the glass isn’t broken, it won’t spread, and it doesn’t need to be repaired. Chips and cracks should be repaired before the damage starts spreading because the top layer of glass is already broken.

+What types of windshield damage can you repair?

We repair rock chips, bullseyes, star breaks, combination breaks, and cracks up to 14 inches long. If the damage sits directly in the driver’s line of sight or has dirt/oil contamination, we’ll take a closer look and let you know if a repair is still safe.

+Will the repair make the damage disappear completely?

Repairs restore strength, but they don’t make the blemish completely vanish. Most repairs improve appearance significantly depending on the type of break and how long it has been there, so it will typically look better but won’t be invisible. The primary goal of windshield repair is to restore structural integrity and prevent the damage from spreading.

+How long does a chip or crack repair take?

Chip repair: 30–45 minutes in total.

Crack repair: 60–90 minutes depending on length and temperature.

+Is the repair guaranteed?

Yes — all repairs from Bob’s are guaranteed for the life of your vehicle. If the chip or crack spreads later, we’ll fix it or refund the cost.

Insurance Questions

+Will my insurance cover the repair?

Most insurance companies cover chips and short cracks up to 6 inches with no deductible. Cracks between 7″ and 14″ are often repairable, but many insurers still follow outdated guidelines that call for replacement once a crack exceeds 6 inches.

+Will filing an insurance claim raise my rates?

Insurance companies say chip repairs don’t affect premiums, but the claim is recorded in the CLUE database, which some carriers reference when setting future rates. We don’t push claims — we give you the facts so you can decide.

+Do you work with USAA, State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, Progressive, and Farmers?

Yes. We work with all insurance companies, and we’ve already agreed to their rates. Customers never pay extra for covered repairs.

+Do I need to call my insurance company first?

No. We can start the claim for you. The insurance rep confirms your information with you, and we complete the repair.

Weather, Temperature & Repair Conditions

+Can you repair a windshield when it’s cold?

Yes, with limitations. Chip repairs are best above 40°F, and crack repairs work better at 50°F+. If it’s colder, we may need to work in your garage so we can warm the glass, or reschedule. We’ll contact you before your appointment if weather looks like a concern.

+Can you repair a windshield in the rain?

The chip must be dry for a proper repair. Cover it with a Chip Saver or clear tape to keep water out. Once it’s dry, we can remove the tape and repair it. If water gets into the break, it needs about 24 hours to dry and we may need to reschedule.

Tip: Keep a small roll of clear tape in your glove box. It can save a repair on a rainy day.

Technical / Expert-Level Questions

+Why do rock chips spread?

Temperature swings, moisture, road vibration, internal stress in modern windshields, and Colorado’s freeze/thaw cycles all contribute. That’s why chips here crack out faster than in mild climates.

+Are long cracks (11″–14″) really safe to repair?

Yes — when done correctly. We’ve repaired thousands since 2003. The key is a controlled process, proper stabilization, and professional tools. Insurance doesn’t cover them, but repair is far cheaper than replacing an ADAS-equipped windshield.

+What tools and resins do you use?

Professional-grade injectors, UV-cured resins, vacuum/pressure cycles, pit polish, and curing strips. No DIY kits or cheap resin — the difference in strength and clarity is huge.

+What do you check before starting a repair?
  • Type of break
  • Presence of trapped moisture
  • Dirt or contamination
  • Location in driver’s field of view
  • Structural safety
  • Whether a repair is the right choice

If it’s not repairable, there’s no charge.

A Closer Look Into Windshield Repair

+Why does Colorado Springs see more cracked-out windshields than other places?

Colorado Springs sees extreme daily temperature swings, constant freeze/thaw cycles, winter sanding, and heavy construction. All of this puts loose gravel on the roads, which gets picked up by tire treads and launched into windshields — one of the main reasons rock-chip damage is so common here.

Once a chip forms, our wide and frequent temperature shifts put the glass under significant thermal stress. As the windshield expands and contracts, it flexes — often turning a small chip or short crack into a much longer crack.

+What’s the difference between DIY repair kits and professional repair?

DIY kits often can’t remove air properly, can’t create vacuum/pressure cycles, and tend to use low-quality resin. A failed attempt with a kit can make a later professional repair less effective or even impossible.

+Why is replacing ADAS windshields so expensive?

Modern windshields house cameras, sensors, heads-up displays, and heating elements that require calibration after replacement. Repairs avoid these costs entirely.
